CAPE TOWN MINSTREL CARNIVAL – JANUARY Know as South Africa’s Mardi
Gras .
The city of Cape Town comes
alive to celebrate new year in a
raucous carnival As the
southeast breeze kicks up
outside Cape Town's Greenpoint
Stadium, the sound of strumming
banjos and banging drums reaches
a crescendo, and thousands of
merry minstrels hold onto their
multicoloured hats. Dressed in a
dazzling array of shining
colours, the minstrel – mostly
men, but also some women and
children burst spontaneously
into song and dance. They croon
in the local Afrikaans dialect
of "Kaapse taal" (Cape
language), jump into little Chaplinesque jigs, and pump
their parasols to and fro.

so much so that local airlines
add extra flights to their
schedules to cope with demand.
The day is a smorgasbord of
activity with on and off course
entertainment throughout the
day, the J&B Most Elegant Couple
Competition and a selection of
South Africa’s top comedians,

million, a far cry from the R40

July 1897, the Durban July is
one of the most talked about and
attended social gatherings
amongst South African racing
fans and the premier race for
thoroughbreds. Run at Greyville

a beautiful and picturesque race
that is known worldwide. The
marathon attracts some 20 000
runners participating in the 56
km ultra and 21 km half
marathon. As the names suggests,

million, with the winner taking
home $500 000 - more than the
winning money on offer at any of
the majors. The purse has in
recent years increased
substantially and this prize
