Xigera (pronounced Keejera) is one of the
Okavango`s best kept secrets. Great scenery
and activities combined with the privacy
make Xigera a wonderful area.
Location
The camp is situated on `Paradise Island`
within the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, close to
its western boundary. Xigera is in an area
which has permanent water all year round -
yet there are lots of large islands in the
area which hold good concentrations of
animals. It is the perfect land and water
activity camp - in fact it is one of the
only Okavango camps which offers game
drives, foot safaris, mokoros and boating
trips. Due to good water levels prevailing,
the camp is open all year round. Xigera has
been in existence since mid 1980, in one of
the most beautiful parts of the Okavango.
Activities
Fly-In, Safari Lodge, Wildlife, Game Drives,
Safari, Camping, Walking /Hiking, Fishing,
Photography, Birding, Game Cruise
Attractions
The game drives regularly see Lion,
Elephant, Lechwe, and even Leopard. The
wooden foot bridge, which connects this
island to the next, is often used by Lion
and Leopard to move between islands. Many a
guest has enjoyed Lion viewing from the
dining room. Besides all the big game,
Xigera has excellent birding. Pels Fishing
Owl, Wattled Crane, Slaty Egret, Rufuous
Bellied Heron, Swamp Boubou and a host of
Eagles, Vultures and Raptors will keep the
bird lover out of mischief. The rare
Sitatunga antelope are at their highest
density in this area. Stalking Sitatunga
silently by mokoro is an experience never to
be forgotten.
Facilities
The camp takes a maximum of 16 guests in
comfortably furnished tented rooms, with
en-suite bathrooms. The rooms are under a
shading grove and look through to the river
flowing past the camp. Meals are enjoyed in
the dining room, which along with the lounge
area, are all under canvas. There is no
swimming pool - the clean flowing river next
to the camp is Xigera`s ``pool``.
Additional
Information
Xigera has something for everyone, in an
area where there are no other Moremi camps
or lodges. The quiet waterways offer perfect
mokoro opportunities - complete with good
game viewing. To get the best wildlife
experience, we suggest you mix your
activities and enjoy the drives, the walks,
the mokoroing and boating.
