Food & Wine:
Experience Ellerman House Food
Superb food is a cornerstone of the Ellerman House philosophy.
In keeping with the hotel?s philosophy of embracing proud South
African hospitality, Cape cuisine is core to the establishment's
menu.
The menu is created daily, and is dependant on the weather, the
nationality of the guests, the food that is in season, and the
wines in the cellar. C Louis Leipoldt - the celebrated Afrikaans
poet, writer, bushveld doctor, medical specialist, botanist and
chef - provides inspiration for many of the dishes. In the late
17th Century, Malay slaves were brought to the Cape and they
changed cooking customs here forever.
Leipoldt's trilogy of cookbooks showcases the extraordinary
fusion of foods that reflect the multi-culturalism of the Cape.
The Ellerman Villa has a state-of-the-art kitchen that guests
are encouraged to use. Should you wish a Malay cook to instruct
you in the secrets of their spicy cooking, let us know and we'll
facilitate the experience.
If you would like to shop for your own fresh fish, seafood or
produce, we will arrange it and our chef will cook it for you.
Let us know your culinary desires, and we will make them come
true. Or you can simple wait for our daily menu, and experience
its epicurean delights.

Experience Ellerman House Wine:
South Africa, the oldest of the New World wine areas, has a
346-year-old winemaking legacy. And the Ellerman House
collection of ocer 15 000 bottles of vintage South African
wines, pays homage to that fine tradition. When Simon van der
Stel (for whom Stellenbosch, one of our most famous wine
producing areas, is named) became governor of the Cape in 1679,
he planted a vineyard on his farm, called Constantia.
He encouraged the French Huguenots - with their rich history of
winemaking - to settle in the Franschoek valley and cultivate
vines. After the 1994 elections, the wine industry - no longer
hampered by restrictive practices - boomed. It was at this time
that Ellerman House itself was created. The Ellerman collection,
bought with care and vision, includes rare vintages impossible
to source at retail.
