General:
Londolozi - the zulu word, meaning, "protector of all living
things" - is a legacy passed to Charles Varty's two
conservation-conscious grandsons, John and Dave Varty, in 1969.
Together, they turned a remote patch of bushveld into an
unsurpassable African wonderland. Where that first campfire lit
up the African night, Londolozi stands today.
Initially, the camp comprised only four rondavels (humble hut
structure) - still intact at Londolozi Bateleur Camp (previously
called Main Camp). The camp started by offering wildlife trails
and safaris with an emphasis on conservation awareness and
education. Word spread and Londolozi grew. In 1980, Londolozi
Bush Camp opened. (now split into Founders and Pioneer Camp).
Tree Camp opened eight years later. These were the first two
game lodge camps in the world to be awarded Relais et Chateaux
status.
CC Africa has a ten year marketing and managing right to
Londolozi, which will be considered for renewal in 2004.
