An extraordinary and extravagant month "
A total of 34 different kills have captivated guests staying at The MalaMala Game Reserve during the month of August 2007. Lions, leopards and wild dog took centre stage and activity in the bush at MalaMala has been absolutely "wild". The lions were most active, bringing down a giraffe (later enjoyed by other members of the lion pride), a kudu, 2 nyala, a buffalo - and even a baboon.
More than 15 different leopards were seen to kill impala, duiker, bush buck, baboon (clearly August was not their lucky month), as well as cane rats and scrub hares.
The wild dog pack which denned on MalaMala enthralled guests who watched them catch and devour 3 impala's and an adult female bushbuck. The natural law of the food chain is alive and well at The MalaMala Game Reserve - testament to the balance and vitality of the reserve and its inhabitants.
One particularly unique sighting was found in the rangers' diary of 31 August.
The large Bicycle Crossing male leopard was found on the morning of 31st August feeding on the remains of an elephant close to the confluence of the Matshapiri River and the Sand River. During the course of the morning a hyena joined the leopard, and they fed together on the carcass - something almost unheard of in a natural system. There was much aggression between the two. When another four hyenas arrived, they chased the Bicycle Crossing male off the carcass. He did not move far and lay down under the cover of thick bush to await his chance to return.
