When to travel to Kenya

With a diverse geography, Kenya is considered a year-round destination for both exceptional game viewing and spectacular scenery. Without a doubt the greatest attraction is the annual wildebeest migration between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya.

The best time to visit Kenya is during the dry seasons, from January to March and July through October. The migration usually arrives in the Masai Mara from the Serengeti in mid-August and remains until late October.

Wildebeest Migration

By late July, the grasses of the western Serengeti are turning yellow and the herds continue moving north. After crossing the Grumeti River in Tanzania the wildebeest and zebra head to Kenya’s Lamai Wedge and the Mara Triangle. Before they reach the lush plains of the Mara, the animals need to cross the Mara River and evade the massive, hungry crocodiles that lie in wait.

September through November, the Mara plains are filled to the brim with large herds of ungulates which in turn attracts many predators.

By November/December the rains start in the south again and the herds begin their long trek back down to the Serengeti plains in Tanzania to have their young.

For wildlife enthusiasts, the best times to visit are the cooler dry season between July and October and the hotter dry season of December to March.

The best time to enjoy Kenya’s magnificent birdlife is from January to March.

The Kenyan coast is at its best between late November and March, or late July to early October. March and April tend to be the hottest times and the rains generally come inlate April to early July, and again in late October to November.

August tends to be the busiest tourist period.
